MGM just dropped the official teaser of its upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic. It features the award-winning Jennifer Hudson singing the iconic song of the queen of soul and she definitely makes you stand up and give full R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
With J-Hud’s impressive list of accolades which include an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG, Critics for Best Supporting Actress, and Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album and Best Musical Theater Album, we are not surprised why Aretha herself handpicked her to play her in the film.
Aretha Louise Franklin was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and activist. She began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Her almost 60-year career with a discography that includes 38 studio albums and 6 live albums, sold about 75 million. Hudson paid tribute to Franklin even before her death and sang at her funeral in August 2018.
“Respect” is directed by Liesl Tommy with screenplay by Tracey Scott Wilson. It will also showcase the talents of Tony winners Audra McDonald as her Aretha’s mother Barbara, and Heather Headley as gospel singer Clara Ward. Forest Whitaker, Saycon Sengbloh, Hailey Kilgore, and Tituss Burgess, and Mary J. Blige and Skye Dakota Turner are also in the cast.
J-Hud may not have won Americal Idol, and got a not so good review of her recent “CATS” film, Respect is for a movie to watch out for this coming 2020.
