Singer, Jomar Pasaron has recently been hailed as the October champ in PalabasTayo’s Wishlist on Kumu Book 1. Pasaron, more popularly known as The Voice Teens Philippines’ Selfless Son ng Olongapo, has poured out not only his heart in singing but has also bared his soul in a recent episode of ALL OUT, inspiring people with his story of resilience and being his own true self.
Despite all the everyday struggles of providing for his family, he keeps fighting. In the episode streamed live on Kumu, Pasaron served as an encouragement for everyone going through tough and trying times. He punctuated the show with the song “Rise Up”, which loudly resonated with the story of his life.
Earlier Influences
Having relatives who are “bandistas” and a cousin who tags him along in some singing events, it wasn’t difficult for him to get drawn to singing. Jomar also said he would sing-along a videoke with his parents, as most Filipino families do.
As a young kid, his musical influences included One Republic and Fall Out Boy. At 9 or 10 years old, he would borrow cassettes of Adele. He shared, “pumupunta pa po ako sa bayan para mag pa-burn ng CD tapos ipapalagay ko mga gusto kong kanta” (I’d go to the city to get my CD burned and have my favorite songs in it).
The good son’s journey
It was a true blessing in disguise when at 12, Pasaron joined a community contest by accident. With the talent God has given him, he knew that this would enable him to help his mother with the family’s finances. He continued to join and win numerous amateur contests in Central Luzon. Even with very limited resources, he grabbed opportunities such as joining The Voice Teens where he was mentored by the one and only, Lea Salonga. After being part of The Voice, he forged on and currently has the Venezian Idol 2019 and Tinig 2020 Champion Titles also under his belt.
When asked about how it feels to be earning more, Jomar, while trying to hold his tears, admitted “sobrang nakakataba po ng puso yun kasi simula dati po talaga yung hangad ko ay makatulong ako sa pamilya ko; kahit yung sa akin konti lang, yung sa kanila mabigay ko” (it’s heartwarming because from the onset, i really want to help my family out; I don’t mind having less for myself as long as I’m able to support them).
The ‘Blue Check’ experience
“Feeling ko Artista ako!”, Jomar excitedly confessed, as he explained how it felt to receive his blue check. He said it was tough to be seen in Kumu especially if you are just starting or if you’re stream is at the bottom; Having the ‘blue check’, being seen on PalabasTayo’s anniversary concert, and topping Wishlist Book 1 was the platform that catapulted and enabled him to entertain more people through his music and to continue spreading positivity and love.
PalabasTayo Wishlist is a weekly show on Kumu that spotlights exceptional performers but are still non-featured streamers. It is not a talent competition but a platform for artists to be seen and heard.
