Filipino-American actor, Dave Bautista plays the role of a father in the upcoming film, “Army of the Dead”. The film directed by Zack Snyder (300, Zack Snyder’s Justice League) takes place following a zombie outbreak that has left Las Vegas in ruins and walled off from the rest of the world.
Bautista has become a household name with the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise years after his professional wrestling retirement. He departs from the usually stoic, action star roles and brings emotional layers to Scott Ward. Zack Snyder who also served as the film’s director of photography shared, that he loves Dave Bautista and has been talking to him for years to do this project. Though a bit reluctant to do another action film, Bautista after reading the script, realized that the character calls for vulnerability and a huge emotional journey to go through. Snyder adds, “He plays this really broken character that wants to reconnect with his daughter. And that part of it, he does an
amazing job at. So that was why I chose him.”
Army of the Dead was initially announced in 2007 and geen lit by Netflix in 2019. Written by Zack Snyder, Shay Hatten, Joby Harold it revolves around Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), a displaced Vegas local, former zombie war hero who’s now flipping burgers on the outskirts of the town he now calls home. He is approached by casino boss Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada), with the ultimate proposition: Break into the zombie-infested quarantined zone to retrieve $200 million sitting in a vault beneath the strip before the city is nuked by the government in 32 hours. Driven by the hope that the payoff could help pave the way to a reconciliation with his estranged daughter Kate (Ella Purnell), Ward takes on the challenge, assembling a ragtag team of experts for the heist. They include Maria Cruz (Ana de la Reguera), an ace mechanic and Ward’s old friend; Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick), a zombie killing machine; Marianne Peters (Tig Notaro), a cynical helicopter pilot; Mikey Guzman (Raúl Castillo), a go-for-broke influencer and Chambers (Samantha Win), his ride-or-die; Martin (Garret Dillahunt), the casino’s head of security; a badass warrior known as the Coyote (Nora Arnezeder) who recruits Burt Cummings (Theo Rossi), a slimy security guard; and a brilliant German safecracker named Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer).
Scott finds an unexpected emotional hurdle when Kate joins the expedition to search for Geeta (Huma Qureshi), a mother who’s gone missing inside the city. With a ticking clock, a notoriously impenetrable vault, and a smarter, faster horde of Alpha zombies closing in, only one thing’s for certain in the greatest heist ever attempted: survivors take all.
Snyder confesses that “The father-daughter relationship has always been at
the core of the movie. And frankly, it’s evolved quite a bit as I’ve evolved. When I was writing those scenes between Kate and Scott, my own experience with my own
children played a huge role, and just the catharsis, you’re children can hurt you with
words worse than anybody but they can also bring you joy, your greatest
sorrow, and your greatest pain. Your greatest highs and your greatest lows. I just thought that and I just brought all of that sort of pain and joy to writing this relationship between Scott and Kate.”
Army of the Dead premieres globally on Netflix this May 21, 2021.
