Universal Pictures has released on its YouTube channel a featurette video showing Ben Platt and other stars of the upcoming movie adaptation of the musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” (DEH) sharing their thoughts about the impact and meaning of the song “You Will Be Found,” which is part of the motion picture soundtrack.
Comments from the cast regarding the song revolve around the feeling of isolation and loneliness, which many people around the world are experiencing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The current situation makes the song and the upcoming film timely and relevant not only in the U.S. but also in other parts of the globe, including the Philippines.
Despite the Philippines has been consistently included among the Top 5 countries in a global optimism index, the National Center for Mental Health revealed a surge in the number of calls related to depression among Filipinos during the pandemic, according to a joint news release coming from the Department of Health and the World Health Organization in September 2020.
NCMH’s report further detailed that from 80 depression-related calls before the pandemic, the number rose to nearly 400 during the lockdowns. The said number, unfortunately, does not reflect the real situation as many Filipinos refrain from sharing with others their mental health challenges.
The song “You Will Be Found” offers the message of hope to people who are experiencing depression amid the pandemic, emphasizing that they are not alone and someone is ready to listen and help them go through the challenging times.
“The idea of being found or being seen is really elemental to what it is to be a human being. This is the piece that allows us to experience that,” said multi-awarded actress Julianne Moore in the video. “This pandemic has made it a realization on how much we are relying on one another, how much we want to be seen by each other, how much we want to interact and how much do people want to be with one another,” she added.

Aside from Platt and Moore, who will play Evan’s mother Heidi, the movie “Dear Evan Hansen” also stars Amy Adams as Cynthia Murphy, Danny Pino as Larry Murphy, Amandla Stenberg as Alana Beck, Colton Ryan as Connor Murphy, and Nik Dodani as Jared Kleinman. New roles specially created for the movie version will be played by DeMarius Copes, Gerald Caesar, and Liz Kate.
The film is directed by Stephen Chbosky with Steven Levenson’s screenplay based on his book, and music by award-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The film is produced by Marc Platt and Adam Seigel.
The original musical follows the life of Evan Hansen, an anxious high school student who gets caught up in a web of lies as his letter is mistaken to be a schoolmate’s suicide note. It opened on Broadway in December 2016 and won numerous awards including six Tony Awards, two Drama League Awards and a Grammy Award. It got rave reviews and encouraged open dialogue about its themes of mental illness and youth suicide.
The movie adaptation of “Dear Evan Hansen” will hit the big screen Sept. 24.
