Grab your friends, Dungeons & Dragons playset, walkie talkies and all the provisional Eggo waffles you can get because we’re about to go back to The Upside Down: Stranger Things, one of Netflix’s biggest shows, announced on their social media that Stranger Things 4 will be split into two volumes, premiering on May 27th and July 1st, 2022, respectively.
An open letter written by series creators, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, confirms that the fourth season, dubbed “the beginning of the end,” will be released in two parts given the unprecedented length. The brothers add, “seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four.”
The letter also details that the Emmy-winning show’s upcoming season nearly has twice the runtime of any previous season, composed of nine scripts, over eight hundred pages, almost two years of filming, and thousands of visual effects shots.
Set six months after the events of The Battle of Starcourt, Stranger Things 4 will focus on the main characters’ friend group as they are separated for the first time, all while a new and horrifying supernatural threat appears. Additionally, the new season will also reveal fan-favorite Jim Hopper’s fate after vanishing during the last battle and mysteriously teleporting to a top-secret facility in Russia.
While the announcement hints at the end of the series after its fifth and final season, the Duffer brothers also tease the possibility of expanding the world of Stranger Things.
“There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes,” the Duffer brothers said. “But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down. As Always, we are grateful for your patience and support.” No further details on the possibilities of spinoffs were mentioned.
Alongside the announcement, five promo posters for the upcoming season have been revealed, revealing some key locations for the story’s new chapter.
Premiering in 2016 as Netflix’s third most-watched original series, Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Cara Buono, and Brett Gelman. It has gone on to become one of the most popular and critically-acclaimed shows of all time, becoming the most-followed TV show online and winning six Primetime Emmy Awards and getting nominated in multiple BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild, American Film Institute, Grammy, and People’s Choice awards.
