In a week full of strong maxi challenge performances and stellar runway presentations, RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 14’s number one highlight is the tear-jerking moment where contestant Jasmine Kennedie comes out as trans in Untucked.
This announcement came after co-contestant DeJa Skye asked the group if any of them had ever thought about transitioning.
“Before coming here, I was about to start hormones. And coming here, I was scared, and I didn’t want to have to go through that process while going through this,” the New York drag queen tearfully shared. “But seeing Kerri and seeing how confident she is in who she is further affirmed what I’ve been feeling my whole life.”
“I definitely do feel that I am trans. And I’ve been so scared to say it. I have held back from it for so long because I didn’t want to hurt my dad, but I can’t lie about it anymore. I am trans.”
Kennedie shared more about her journey as a trans woman and her initial struggles with her identity on an Instagram post. On a photo of herself on HRT, she wrote, “Growing up I always felt different. I never really fit the mold of what society has panned out for me to be. For the last 7 years of my life I put all of my focus on my career. Never did I take a chance to step back and ask myself, what does Kyle want to be or what does Kyle want to do. It was always what does Jasmine need to succeed.”
She went on to discuss the gender dysphoria she experienced while doing drag and continuing to work as a drag performer to fill a void in her life, using it to get her closer to who she really is, and stumbling upon continental pageantry at age 15 and affirming her desire to become a confident and beautiful trans woman.
“I am now at a place in my life where I feel confident enough to finally start living my truth and stop worry about what others think. I started my HRT(hormone replacement therapy) a couple months after coming back from drag race and I couldn’t be more happier. Everything I’ve wanted is finally happening and I am so thankful for the people who made it possible,” she shared. She also thanked fellow Season 14 contestant, Kerri Colby for making her feel comfortable to talk about her identity.
Kennedie’s revelation means that this season of Drag Race now has four trans drag queens, making it the most trans-inclusive season of the franchise. Kennedie is joined by drag queens Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté, Kerri Colby, and Bosco, who came out as trans outside of the show, but also expressed her interest in transitioning in the latest episode of Untucked.
This emotional reveal has garnered praise from critics and fans alike, with many calling the candid discussion a prime example of why representation matters in media.
