Sixty years after Dionne Warwick took the Burt Bacharach and Hal David-composed ‘Walk On By’ to the top of the charts, the track, published by BMG, is topping charts around the world courtesy of a prominent sample in the hot new hit single of rap star Doja Cat, ‘Paint The Town Red’.
The track has reached Number One in 15 countries including the US, UK, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Slovakia, and Switzerland, and the Billboard Global 200 this week (chart week dated September 16, 2023), while also reaching the Top 10 in an additional 10 countries.
The song, performed by recording artist Doja Cat, is driven by a heavily featured sample from ‘Walk On By’ co-written by BMG publishing clients Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
Initially written for Dionne Warwick in 1963, ‘Walk On By’ reached Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and scored a Grammy nomination for Best Rhythm and Blues Recording. In 1969, Isaac Hayes recorded another famed version of the track, with the song having since charted numerous times in various countries, with wildly different arrangements.
‘Paint The Town Red’ made history becoming the first female solo rap song to top Spotify’s US Top 50 daily chart and Global Spotify 200 daily chart, while also reigning as the fastest solo female rap song to amass 100 million streams.
Following its release, the song became a viral sensation soundtracking over 600k video on TikTok alone and was an MTV Video Music Awards nominee for Song of the Summer.
