Only a month left until Buruguduystunstugudunstuy: Ang Parokya ni Edgar Musical (Ang PNE Musical), the newest original Filipino production from Newport World Resorts featuring the songs of Parokya ni Edgar, rocks the stage. The cast and creative team are in the final stretch of preparations, meticulously polishing every detail to deliver an epic show.
A recent press conference held on Friday, March 15 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT) Vestibule, offered a special peek into the world of the musical. Members of the cast performed a medley of Parokya ni Edgar songs to show off what audiences can expect in the complete musical.
Among the members of the audience is Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda who witnessed the snippet for the first time. “Sobrang galing minsan pati ako hindi ko naisip na ganyan pala kaganda yung songs namin [It’s really amazing sometimes I can’t imagine our songs were that good] when treated professionally,” Miranda shared.
“We’re just a bunch of kids playing songs and we never view our songs as anything outstanding or professional pero nung ganitong treatment nakakakilabot [but this treatment gave me goosebumps],” he added.
The cast also revealed their characters’ names which are all derived from the tracks in Parokya ni Edgar’s discography. The four women leading the cast, Felicity Kyle Napuli, Marynor Madamesila, Tex Ordoñez-De Leon, and Natasha Cabrera, play the roles of Aiza, Jen, Norma, and Girlie, respectively. Supporting cast members include Pepe Herrera as Mr. Suave, Noel Comia as Tikmol, Nicco Manalo as Mang Jose, and Jasper Jimenez as Tito Ralph.
Bringing a musical of this magnitude to life requires immense work backstage. Ang PNE Musical boasts a seasoned creative team assembled by Newport World Resorts through their production arm, Full House Theater Company (FHTC).
The new production reunites some of the geniuses behind the most-watched Filipino musical Ang Huling El Bimbo. Returning at the helm are Director Dexter M. Santos and FHTC Co-Artistic Directors Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Michael Williams.
Santos revealed that it is a tall order to stage a major theatrical production in NPAT which has over 1,700 seating capacity. They get to ”serve every part of the audience” through the collective efforts of the creative team.
Theatergoers better get ready for a rollercaster ride of emotions. “In terms of feels, it will be a lot of fun. It will be naughty. It has a wide range of comedy. It can be dark most of the time and some of the time, but also there’s love and there’s kilig [romantic excitement],” he added.
Critically acclaimed and versatile writer Rody Vera also joined the creative team as playwright along with musical genius Ejay Yatco as the musical director and arranger. Choreographer Stephen Viñas, scenic designer Lawyn Cruz, lights designer Meliton Roxas Jr., sound engineer Rards Corpus , sound designer Arvy Dimaculangan, conductor Mickey Jacinto, MPO Artistic Director Rodel Colmenar, costume designer Raven Ong, video designers GA Fallarme and Joyce Garcia, and Hair and Make Up Designer Johann de la Fuente complete the all-star creative team.
The story of the musical hints at a whirlwind of unpredictable twists and turns around four women who find themselves at the crossroads of their individual challenges. As fate intertwines their paths, they embark on an extraordinary journey of self-discovery, resilience, and unbreakable bonds.
