Written and directed by Guelan Varela-Luarca (Carlos Palanca Awards Hall of Famer),3 UPUAN is a play about time and grief. Telling the story of three siblings who are brought together and torn apart by death. With just three chairs and three actors, it was hailed as the ‘Best Play (One Act)’ of 2024 by the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The cast of 3 Upuan includes Jojit Lorenzo, JC Santos, and Martha Comia, who reprise their roles as the siblings Jers, Jack, and Jai, respectively. The three actors return as the show’s producers under a newly formed theater company, Scene Change (Sc.), with Luarca, award-winning lighting designer & technical director D Cortezano, and film & theatre writer-director-producer Giancarlo Abrahan.
3 Upuan is an intimate theatre experience. The original production of 3 Upuan was held in a dressing room of the Areté, the creativity and innovation hub of Ateneo de Manila University. The show returns to Areté—but this time in the Joselito & Olivia Campos Teaching Laboratory in the JJ Atencio Innovation Link.
Limited run, limited seats. This production will be selling only 60 tickets for every show. “We’re still keeping the shows very intimate with super limited seating,” said Luarca. Luarca as director heads the creative team which includes Monty Uy (stage management), Teia Contreras (assistant direction & video projection), Anyah Katriel Garcia (movement), D Cortezano (lights), Julia Vaila (production management & sound), and Nyssa Bianzon (technical direction).
