February marks National Arts Month, a time to honor creativity, celebrate artistic expression, and recognize artists who shape our cultural identity. Beyond appreciation, it is a reminder of how art connects people, sparks conversation, and brings stories to life in meaningful ways. Embracing this spirit, the idea of Behind The Curtain was born, an art symposium designed to inspire students, aspiring creatives, and young theater practitioners.
Theater thrives on collaboration, creativity, and the art of storytelling. These elements took center stage at Behind The Curtain, where participants gained rare insights from industry professionals, offering them a firsthand glimpse into the world of professional theater. More than just a learning experience, the event aimed to celebrate the often-overlooked contributions of backstage professionals like production designers, technical experts, and stage managers, whose expertise ensures every performance runs seamlessly.

Held across two De La Salle University (DLSU) campuses, the symposium opened with two sessions on February 5, 2025, at the Natividad Fajardo – Rosario Gonzalez Auditorium in DLSU Manila, followed by its final session at GT MPH in DLSU Laguna. Organized by the Culture and Arts Office (CAO) and the DLSU Green Media Group-Laguna (GMG-Laguna), the event aligned with the university’s mission to cultivate a vibrant cultural and artistic community.
The event, a joint project of the Culture and Arts Office Manila, Student Affairs Office Laguna, and Green Media Group, was a long-envisioned collaboration between DLSU and GMG Productions, aimed at bridging the gap between aspiring creatives and seasoned industry experts. It featured three insightful sessions: The Art and Craft of Directing the Show, The Unsung Heroes of Musical Theatre, and Journey to Confident Communication.
Participants gained an in-depth understanding of the collaborative process behind productions, learning firsthand about the roles, challenges, and artistry of industry professionals.
A Platform for Future Creatives
The symposium provided students with valuable industry insights, professional mentorship, and global perspectives in the performing arts. Organizers hope to continue fostering creative collaborations and learning opportunities to inspire the next generation of Filipino theater professionals.
