Mugler has officially named Miguel Castro Freitas as its new creative director, succeeding Casey Cadwallader, who steps down at the end of March. This move marks a new chapter for the French fashion house, known for its bold, theatrical legacy.
Freitas, a Portuguese designer, brings with him two decades of experience in the fashion industry. With a career that spans prestigious houses such as Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Dries Van Noten, Freitas has built a reputation for his expertise in tailoring and design. He is especially known for his deep understanding of Mugler’s DNA and its couture heritage.

“Miguel lives and breathes the Mugler spirit. His talent and creativity made him the natural choice,” said Danièle Lahana-Aidenbaum, global brand president of Mugler Fashion and Fragrances.
Freitas’ appointment follows a period of speculation after Mugler was absent from Paris Fashion Week for Autumn/Winter 2025. The brand confirmed the departure of Casey Cadwallader, who led the house for seven years, helping redefine Mugler’s identity for a new generation. Under his leadership, Mugler became synonymous with inclusivity, empowerment, and stunning performances at the runway. Cadwallader’s tenure also saw the brand flourish in popular culture, attracting big-name celebrities like Beyoncé, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion.
“I’m thrilled to bring my own vision, story, and emotion to this monumental heritage,” Freitas said in a statement. He will officially join Mugler on April 1 and present his first collection during Paris Fashion Week in September 2025.
Known for his work in luxury fashion, Freitas’ background includes stints at Yves Saint Laurent under Stefano Pilati, Lanvin under Alber Elbaz, and Christian Dior. He also led Sportmarx from SS21 to SS24, but it’s his knowledge of Mugler’s legacy that makes him the perfect fit for this role.
Mugler, which was acquired by L’Oréal in 2019, continues to have a strong influence in the fashion world, particularly in fragrances with hits like Angel and Alien. Under Freitas, the brand is expected to deepen its couture codes while integrating modern design sensibilities.
As the fashion world anticipates Freitas’ debut, the shift comes at a time when Mugler is making significant strides in its reinvention, including the launch of leather goods like the Spiral Curve bag and a return to seasonal collections. Freitas’ leadership promises to build upon Mugler’s rich history and propel the house into the future.
