The highly anticipated film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Kiss of the Spider Woman is set to hit theaters this fall. Jennifer Lopez stars in the title role, bringing the beloved character of Aurora to life in vibrant song and dance. The film, directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls), had its world premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and is now set for a wide release through a new distribution deal with Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate, and LD Entertainment. While the exact release date has not been announced, the film is expected to arrive just in time for awards season.

Kiss of the Spider Woman tells the story of two cellmates in an Argentine prison. One is a political revolutionary, Valentin (Diego Luna), and the other is Molina (Tonatiuh), a gay window dresser. To keep Valentin’s spirits up, Molina recounts stories from his favorite films, including his obsession with the actress Ingrid Luna (played by Lopez). As the tale unfolds, Molina’s storytelling becomes a form of escape, blending fantasy with the harsh reality of their circumstances.
The musical was originally based on Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel and was adapted into a Broadway show in 1993, winning multiple Tony Awards. Condon’s adaptation which also includes Broadway alum Josefina Scaglione (West Side Story) promises a blend of theatricality, deep emotion, and powerful performances, with a score by John Kander and Fred Ebb, the iconic duo behind Cabaret and Chicago.
Lopez’s role in Kiss of the Spider Woman marks her debut in a musical theater adaptation for film. Though she has a background in music and has produced a musical film of her own (This Is Me… Now: A Love Story), this project allows her to showcase her acting and musical talents in a new light. Lopez was supposed to star in a live TV version of Bye Bye Birdie, which was later canceled due to scheduling conflicts.
Producers of the film include Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity, alongside other key players like Barry Josephson and Tom Kirdahy. The film’s executive producers include Condon, Lopez, and a number of industry veterans, ensuring its production quality and reach.
This adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman is expected to be a major player during the upcoming awards season, with the cast’s standout performances generating early buzz. The film’s release represents a unique opportunity to bring this classic story, filled with rich performances and spectacular music, to a whole new audience.
Fans of the original musical and new viewers alike will be able to experience this unforgettable story on the big screen later this year. Keep an eye out for more details as the film’s release approaches!
