Val Kilmer, the versatile actor known for iconic roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever, and The Doors, has passed away at 65. He died on Tuesday in Los Angeles from pneumonia, according to his daughter Mercedes. Kilmer had battled throat cancer since 2014, undergoing surgery that affected his voice, but he had made a remarkable recovery in recent years.

Kilmer was a standout talent in Hollywood in the 1980s and 1990s, bringing powerful performances to films like Tombstone (1993) and Heat (1995). His portrayal of fighter pilot Iceman in Top Gun (1986) and his role as Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991) are among his most memorable. His career soared, but he also faced challenges with a reputation for being temperamental and intense on set.

In his youth, Kilmer was a standout at the Juilliard School, becoming the youngest student ever accepted into its prestigious drama program. His acting career kicked off with films like Top Secret! (1984) and Real Genius (1985), but it was his role in Top Gun that catapulted him to fame.

Kilmer’s later years included his return to the screen in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), reprising his role as Iceman despite the lasting effects of his cancer treatment. His performances in Tombstone and Heat are still celebrated for their depth and intensity.

Director Michael Mann, who worked with Kilmer on Heat, praised his range, while actor Josh Brolin shared a tribute, calling Kilmer “a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker.” Fellow actors like David Thewlis and Will Kemp also remembered Kilmer’s generosity and unpredictable nature on set.

Kilmer’s career was filled with highs and lows, but his legacy as one of Hollywood’s most distinct talents will endure. From his breakthrough role in Top Gun to his iconic portrayal of Doc Holliday, Kilmer’s work will continue to define a generation of filmgoers.
