Broadway’s much-anticipated Bobby Darin musical, Just in Time, began previews on March 31 at the Circle in the Square Theatre. The production will officially open on April 26, with an opening celebration on April 23. The intimate, nightclub-inspired theatre will immerse the audience in the world of Darin’s legendary performances.
Just in Time stars Tony Award winner Jonathan Groff as Bobby Darin. Groff, known for his roles in Merrily We Roll Along, Spring Awakening and Hamilton, has a personal connection to Darin. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Groff shared that his obsession with the legendary performer began after a night of music with Ted Chapin. “I went on YouTube and started watching Bobby Darin clips,” Groff said. “It was like these black-and-white videos were coming out of the screen and grabbing my heart.” This passion for Darin’s energy and performance style led to the development of the musical, which has been in the works for seven years.

Directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers, Just in Time brings Darin’s story to life through an immersive nightclub experience. The production has transformed the Circle in the Square Theatre into an environment that makes the audience feel like part of the action. Groff even mentioned performing on tables and engaging with the audience during the show, creating a truly interactive experience.
The cast features a talented group of actors, including Erika Henningsen (Mean Girls), Michele Pawk (Wicked), and Joe Barbara (A Bronx Tale The Musical). The show also boasts a creative team with an impressive track record: a book by Warren Leight and Isaac Oliver, choreography by Shannon Lewis, and music supervision by Andrew Resnick.
The production’s design is led by a stellar team: scenic design by Derek McLane, costume design by Catherine Zuber, lighting design by Justin Townsend, and sound design by Peter Hylenski. Together, they’ve crafted a visual and auditory experience that complements the immersive atmosphere of the show.
Just in Time was originally set to open on April 23, but the official opening has been moved to April 26, giving the production extra time to settle into its new venue. The change allows the show a bit more room to breathe in a busy month of Broadway openings.
