Actor Eric Dane, known for his standout roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has revealed he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The 52-year-old actor shared the news in an exclusive interview with People magazine.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” Dane said. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” He also confirmed that he will continue working and is scheduled to return to set for season three of Euphoria this week.

ALS is a rare and progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, gradually impairing a person’s ability to move, speak, eat, and eventually breathe. There is currently no cure. While the average life expectancy after diagnosis is three to five years, some patients, like Stephen Hawking, have lived for decades with the condition.
Dane rose to fame playing Dr. Mark Sloan—nicknamed “McSteamy”—in Grey’s Anatomy. His character became a fan favorite and one of the most iconic figures in the show’s history. He currently stars as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria, a role he will continue despite his diagnosis. Season three of the acclaimed drama is set to premiere in 2026.
Over his career, Dane has appeared in various television and film projects, including Marley & Me, Charmed, Saved by the Bell, and most recently, Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Known for his on-screen charisma, he has consistently portrayed complex, layered characters.
Dane is married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart. The couple have two daughters, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.

As he begins this new chapter, Dane is asking for privacy for his family. His announcement adds his name to a growing list of public figures who have been diagnosed with ALS, including Roberta Flack, John Driskell Hopkins, and the late Stephen Hawking.
Production for Euphoria season three begins April 14.
