The hit teen movie 10 Things I Hate About You is making its way to Broadway.

Pop star Carly Rae Jepsen and writer-director Lena Dunham are leading the adaptation of the 1999 romantic comedy into a full-scale musical. Jepsen will co-write the music with composer and producer Ethan Gruska. Dunham is co-writing the book with award-winning playwright Jessica Huang.

Jepsen confirmed the news on Instagram, writing:

“I can tell you 10 things I’m excited about right now or just skip to number one which is working on this dream project with this dream team! #10ThingsMusical 🙌❤️”

10 Things I Hate About You The Musical

The original film, inspired by Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, became a cult favorite for its witty take on high school love, standout performances from Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, and a memorable late-’90s soundtrack. Ledger’s surprise serenade of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” remains one of the film’s most iconic moments.

Now, a new creative team is bringing that energy to the stage. Directing and choreographing the musical is Christopher Wheeldon, a Tony winner known for An American in Paris and MJ: The Musical. Tom Kitt, the acclaimed composer behind Next to Normal, will handle music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations.

This will be Jepsen’s first time writing for Broadway, though she previously starred in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella and Grease: Live. Dunham is also making her Broadway debut, expanding on a busy year that includes her upcoming Netflix series Too Much.

Producer Mike Bosner, the force behind Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and Shucked, will produce the show in partnership with Buena Vista Theatrical.

No opening date or theater has been announced yet, but 10 Things I Hate About You: The Musical is already building buzz — promising a fresh, emotional take on a teen classic.
