Gucci has named Demna, the trailblazing Artistic Director of Balenciaga, as its new creative leader, set to begin in early July 2025. The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for the iconic Italian fashion house, which is looking to rejuvenate its creative direction after a period of financial struggle.
Demna, who has been credited with reshaping modern luxury since taking the helm at Balenciaga in 2015, is known for his bold, sometimes controversial designs that blend streetwear with high fashion. His tenure at Balenciaga was marked by innovative pieces like the Triple S sneakers and his famous “destroyed” sneakers, which sparked both admiration and debate.

Francesco-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO of Kering, Gucci’s parent company, praised Demna’s influence on the industry, stating, “Demna’s creative power is exactly what Gucci needs.” Pinault also expressed gratitude for Demna’s contributions at Balenciaga and his potential to lead Gucci into a new creative phase.
Stefano Cantino, CEO of Gucci, echoed this sentiment, noting Demna’s rare ability to honor a brand’s legacy while embracing contemporary aesthetics. “With Gucci’s strengthened foundations as a springboard, Demna will lead the House towards renewed fashion authority,” Cantino added.
Demna, speaking about his new role, said, “It is an honor to contribute to a House that I deeply respect and have long admired. I look forward to writing together with Stefano and the whole team a new chapter of Gucci’s amazing story.”
His appointment follows the departure of Sabato De Sarno, who had a short-lived tenure as Gucci’s creative head. With Gucci facing challenges in recent years, Demna’s arrival is seen as a bold step toward restoring the brand’s status in both the fashion world and its financial performance.
