It was in 2014 when Dulaang UP mounted Ang Nawalang Kapatid, an original Filipino musical, adapted from the Indian epic Mahabharata. The critically-acclaimed show created by Floy Quintos and Ceejay Javier featured an all-student cast including Jules dela Paz, Ross Pesigan, Jon Abella, Stephen Viñas, Lance Reblando, Teetin Villanueva, and Vincent Pajara. The full video of the show was recently published by Dulaang UP on the internet and is now available for streaming for free. The show which a little under two hours is a good watch during this community quarantine times.
It’s a bit hard to believe that our team interviewed three of the show’s very young leads over six years ago. The then-senior UP theater students Teetin, Ross, and Jon who played Prinsesa Draupadi, Karna, and Yudisthira respectively, talked about their experiences doing the show directed by Dexter Santos, answered questions from media as well as local and foreign/theater actors, and did fun challenges prepared by us. Let’s look back and see what these brilliant theater actors had to say then.
The company bows below demonstrate the visual feast that radiated from the stage which is probably why Gibbs Cadiz of the Philippine Daily Inquirer said that the show is “an astonishing theatrical experience that beggars description as a mere musical”.
