Amandla Stenberg has been officially cast as Alana in Universal’s film adaptation of “Dear Evan Hansen.” According to a Variety report by Dave McNary, she will play an expanded version of the role from the award-winning musical as a high school senior Alana including her own song in the movie.
“Dear Evan Hansen”, multi-Tony Award winner including best musical in 2017 follows the story of a high school student with social anxiety whose lie makes his life even more complicated after the family of his classmate, mistakes Hansen’s letters for their son’s suicide note.
Stenberg, known for her roles in “The Hate U Give” and “Everything, Everything,” will play Alana – a high school overachiever with a cheery façade and a knack for social media hides her deep loneliness and isolation, ignites a movement after the death of a classmate.
Alana’s role has been expanded for the movie, with Stenberg collaborating with the musical’s composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul for a new original song, especially for the film.
The movie will be under Universal with a screenplay by Steven Levenson who also wrote the book for the stage musical and Stephen Chbosky sitting on the director’s chair. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will produce for their Universal-based Marc Platt Productions.
Ben Platt who won a Tony for the title role has been expected to reprise the role of Evan but no confirmation has been announced to date. Kaitlyn Dever, on the other hand, has been cast to play Zoe, who begins to date the lead character after he gets close to the classmate’s family.
